Dr. Rich is a cardiothoracic surgeon and has practiced adult cardiothoracic surgery at the nationally acclaimed Sentara Heart Hospital for the past 25 years. He specialized in the surgical treatment of adults with acquired cardiac disease and has special interests in heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory assistance as well as in trans-catheter based cardiovascular care.
Dr. Rich has been a tireless advocate for quality improvement, performance measurement, accountability, transparency and payment reforms that drive quality and contain costs, as evidenced by his work locally at Sentara, in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and nationally as the director of the Center for Medicare Management and Past President of the STS. His expertise goes beyond the theoretical, as he has developed and implemented strategic projects to achieve these goals and continues to explore other models of healthcare delivery and reimbursement both for hospitals and physicians. He has worked extensively with cardiologists on quality improvement and program design.
